Freeze in excel8/8/2023 Be sure to check back next week for more time-saving technology tips. This is just one of the many Microsoft Office features that make navigating a project easier. Tap Freeze Top Row or Freeze First Column. This is at the bottom of the pop-up menu. If you don't see the menu, tap the icon of the A in front of a pencil. The app looks like an x on top of a green rectangle. The Freeze Top Row option locks the first row in the sheet. Open a project in the Microsoft Excel app. When you’re ready to unfreeze your rows and columns, simply select any row or column and then go to the View tab. The Freeze Panes option locks both rows and columns that are above and left the current cell. With your selected rows now frozen in place, you will be able to scroll up, down, and sideways in your spreadsheet without having your needed columns or rows move off screen. From here, click on the first option, Freeze Panes. Next, go to the View tab and click Freeze Panes. To freeze a row or column in Excel, select the cell that’s in the first column and row that you don’t want to be frozen. There are three types of cell references: Relative references: These are the default references used in Excel. When you create a formula in Excel, you use cell references to tell Excel which cells to use in the calculation. When you think about it, this Excel feature is kind of like a grown-up version of freeze tag. Step 1: Understanding Cell References Before we dive into the shortcut, its important to understand cell references. It can be maddening to try and cross-reference a certain row or column on one side of the spreadsheet with another that’s offscreen.Įxcel’s freeze feature resolves this pain point by freezing a selected row or column into place, allowing you to scroll off screen while having your needed row or column locked into place. Once a spreadsheet grows to be larger than the screen, it can become tricky to navigate. By taking advantage of tools like Excel’s freeze feature, workers can make the most of their time by navigating a spreadsheet more efficiently.
